Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about Color Atlas and its tools.
What is Color Atlas?
Color Atlas is a bilingual color encyclopedia with hundreds of named colors, curated palettes and more than twenty free tools for conversion, harmony, accessibility and image analysis.
Do I need an account?
No. Every page and tool is available without registration.
Are my images uploaded when I analyze them?
No. Images are processed entirely in your browser and are never sent to our server or any third party.
How accurate are the color conversions?
HEX, RGB, HSL and HSV conversions are mathematically exact in sRGB. CMYK is approximate because real printing depends on the printer and paper color profile.
Can I use the colors and palettes in commercial projects?
Yes. Color codes are not protected, and you can use any color or palette from the site in personal and commercial projects.
How are color percentages in an image calculated?
Pixels are grouped with k-means clustering in CIELAB space, then every pixel is assigned to its nearest dominant color. The percentage is each group's share of the analyzed pixels.
What does a 4.5:1 contrast ratio mean?
It is the WCAG AA minimum for normal text. It means the lighter color has about 4.5 times the relative luminance of the darker one, after adding the standard's constant.
How can I suggest a color or report an error?
