How Football Leagues, Cups and Knockout Tournaments Differ

Football competitions can look similar on television while following very different rules.

League tables

Teams usually earn points across a season, commonly three for a win and one for a draw, subject to competition rules.

Knockout cups eliminate teams through individual matches or two-leg ties, depending on the round.

Goal difference, head-to-head results, extra time, and penalties apply differently across tournaments.

Never assume that a rule from one league applies to another; organizers publish competition-specific regulations.

Review these principles against your needs and current local rules before making a decision.
